Jennifer has a good post about PMPs and certifications. The best part of the post is the following:
“It's like asking, can you estimate how long it will take to have a baby? 9 months you reply. The PMP will say, "No, it's not really 9 months because our deadline is March first. Can you reestimate?" No, I can't because it takes 9 months to have a child! No matter how many people you put on the job, it takes 9 months.”
Could there be a better analogy for project estimation? I get really annoyed by project managers when they come to you with the idea that adding more people to the project is a good idea. In my experience, this rarely helps and is more detrimental (and costly) than anything. As Jennifer correctly points out, a baby “project” takes 9 months no matter how many people you put on the “project” (and I should know, I've got three of those “projects” running around my house).
