AutoTest.NET

Wednesday, November 07 2007

For those that follow James Avery's blog you might have noticed that the last several of his posts were related to him attending RubyConf. While he was there we were chatting over IM about how it was going and he mentioned he saw a tool that built and ran tests as soon as a file was saved, at which point we spent about 10 seconds agreeing that something like that would be cool to have in .NET. I even wrote it on my whiteboard as something to do in all the free time I don't have [1].

Well, James took immediate action and released version 0.1 of AutoTest.NET, which "is a little command line utility that sits next to your editor and then runs all of your tests every time you save a change to your files. It's kind of like personal continuous integration." Sounds like nothing short of a rockin good time to me.

It's obviously very early in its release and James warns stuff could break often, but you owe it to yourself to check it out (James even put together a very short screencast for it). All sort of possibilities are gonna crop up with this tool.

[1] Yes, it has been erased from my whiteboard.
