Day of .NET in Columbus

Tuesday, January 04 2005

This is going to sound like marketing material, but hopefully it's worth it...

Want to be a part of an ever-growing .NET developer community? Want to get knee-deep into code with some of the area’s technology leaders? And do you want it for free? Well, your opportunity has arrived with the first ever Day of .NET in Columbus.

The event will be held at the Microsoft office in Columbus, Ohio on Friday, January 21, 2005 (yes, this is a little short notice... sorry about that). This is a day-long experience with sessions built around showing you code to enhance your knowledge of the .NET development platform. These sessions are more demo-focused than slide-focused to expose you to the ins and outs of writing .NET code. You’ll also see an in-depth preview of some of the less talked about features of Visual Studio 2005, such as ADO.NET 2.0 and WinForms 2.0.

So what are you waiting for? The entire day is free, lunch is free, and there will be some cool software giveaways. Seating is limited, so register today.

Sessions (6 total):

Implement a Service Gateway with COM Interop and Web Services – Dave Donaldson, Arcware
Even though .NET has been around for 3 or 4 years now, many developers and companies have yet to fully embrace the platform, due in large part the need to maintain existing systems. This talk will demonstrate how .NET can be used to extend the life of existing applications by acting as a bridge between COM and web services, thus allowing companies to ease into their .NET migration. The focus will be on the Service Gateway pattern with specific emphasis on the boundaries of the .NET assembly, where one side uses COM Interop and the other side uses web services.

Building Web Services – Drew Robbins, Agogy Software
The .NET platform includes several ways to expose business functionality through Web Services. In this session, we’ll dive into the different technologies you can use today for building Web Services. We will also look at how you can leverage the Web Services Enhancements (WSE) 2.0 add-on to employ security and policy standards on your Web Service interface.

Test-Driven Development in .NET – Ben Carey, NuSoft Solutions

This session will look at how to use test driven development as part of the day-to-day development process on the .Net platform. Benefits, challenges, experiences, and walkthroughs will be discussed to introduce TDD concepts.

Pimp Your IDE – James Avery, Infozerk

Learn how to get the most out of Microsoft Visual Studio .NET and become a more efficient developer using the tips and tricks presented in this session. Learn how to get the most from the editor and IntelliSense as well as how to customize the IDE to your liking. This session will also cover a handful of add-ins and extensions that can be used to add functionality to Visual Studio. NET.

The Importance and Implementation of Client-Side Scripting in ASP.NET – Steve Caravajal, MAX Technical Training

ASP.NET introduced a number of features that achieve improved functionality and reduce development time. For example, web forms and server controls work together to translate client-side user actions into server-side code execution. Despite making the user interaction more event driven, this may cause an unnecessary number of round trips to the web server. Client-side scripting can help to minimize these round trips or postbacks. Client-side scripting is as important today as it has ever been, and we need to continue to utilize this capability in ways beyond data validation. The purpose of this talk is threefold: 1) demonstrate some common uses of client-side script, 2) discover and utilize the ASP.NET capability for delivering client-side script to the rendered web form, and 3) discuss the options for optimum reuse of client-side scripting functionality. During the process, we'll uncover how ASP.NET 's built-in server controls utilize client-side scripting, we will build custom controls that utilize client-side scripting to enhance the user experience, and we will take a peek at what we can expect for the client-side toolbox in ASP.NET 2.0.

What’s New in the Visual Studio 2005 IDE, ADO.NET 2.0, and WinForms 2.0 – Alex Lowe, Microsoft

For all the talk about the upcoming features in ASP.NET 2.0, there are a number of great enhancements being made in other parts of the .NET platform that just don’t get the same publicity. This session will provide you with a technical drilldown into the great productivity booster coming in the Visual Studio 2005 IDE, the ADO.NET 2.0 base classes, and last the features in WinForms 2.0. Specifically, we will cover Code Expansions, Debugging Visualizers, Asynchronous database capabilities, Multiple Active Resultsets, provider independent data access, new fit and finish features for WinForms, and ClickOnce deployment.

Any way that we can open this to more people since it filled up so fast?

I can't believe it filled up that fast. Amazing. I'll see what we can do, but can't make any promises. Stay tuned.
