Firefox Add-On: MeasureIt

Every now and then I come across an element on a web site and wonder how big it is. This is especially true for images, but also applies to any content area, header, footer, whatever. There are ways to easily determine the size of an object on a page by using add-ons such as the Web Developer toolbar or Firebug, but those require digging through some CSS and don’t necessarily give you the exact size of an image, for instance. The absolute simplest and quickest way to get this information is by using the MeasureIt add-on.

MeasureIt serves as a ruler to measure the height and width of any element, space, or area on a web page. After you install it, you’ll notice a little icon in the bottom-left corner of Firefox:

Clicking the MeasureIt icon overlays the page with a light “film” and gives you a cursor from which you can drag over an area to get the height and width, such as getting the measurements of today’s Google logo celebrating Sesame Street:

As you drag your cursor over an area of the page, MeasureIt automatically calculates the size and displays it right in front of you. No need to dig through CSS or download an image just to use another program to determine its size. It’s literally a 5 second process using MeasureIt.

So there you go. A dead simple add-on that does only one thing and does it well. MeasureIt is currently at version 0.3.9 and can be downloaded/installed from here.
