I've been in dire need of a new cell phone the last few months. My Motorola MPx 220 Smartphone has been good to me, but it's time has run out. Not willing to make another cell phone mistake (also known as the *terrible* Motorola RAZR), I've spent the last couple months reading up on most of the smartphones and PDAs out there, while at the same time visiting my local Cingular store to check out some of the phones in person.

For the longest time I was fairly convinced that I was going to get the Cingular 8525. It's a wonderful piece of engineering marvelness, but its hefty price tag sort of kept me from buying it, and looking back on it I'm glad. See, here's the thing: a phone such as the Cingular 8525 (or the Treo 700, etc) is a computer first, then a phone second. What I really needed is a good *phone*, one that is a phone first and computer second, but with all the features I've come to rely on from a smartphone (especially ActiveSync to sync with my hosted Exchange server for all my emails and calendar entries). So once I started thinking that way I abandoned my greed for the Cingular 8525 and focused on two other smartphones: the Cingular 3125 and the Samsung Blackjack.

Even though the Cingular 3125 was well reviewed, I wasn't impressed with it when I saw it in the store. It was just kind of eh. Now, the Samsung Blackjack on the other hand is a different story. Not only has it also gotten good reviews, it's impressive to hold. It's fairly light and thin, but has a rock-solid feel to it. The large screen is sharp and vibrant and the updated Windows Mobile 5 is quite nice. The sound and reception is loud, which is a vast improvement over what I was used to with the MPx 220.

The icing on the cake was that a few days ago Cingular started running a new promotion to get a Blackjack for $175, but then you get $100 back through a rebate. So I got my wife one too, and let me tell you, she was hooked in about 10 seconds :-)

If you're in the market for a great smartphone, make sure you check out the Blackjack before making your final decision.

Don't forget about the Blackberry Pearl. I have one and it's superior.

Last month I spent a week in Dallas for our in.Telligent conference , which was held at the Westin Galleria hotel . The hotel was pretty nice and was adjoined to the Galleria mall, but for all the shopping that was on-site, what I was most interested
